Library Media Policies & Procedures

The mission of the library media program in Edmond Public Schools is to enable students to become independent, lifelong learners in a rapidly changing technological and culturally diverse society.  To accomplish this mission the library media specialists and classroom teachers work together to teach students how to locate, select, evaluate, and interpret, organize and communicate the information relevant to Edmond’s educational curriculum goals.

The library media program is vital in the promotion of literacy by placing strong emphasis on reading for pleasure as well as for information.

A partnership is essential to the accomplishment of this mission.  Administrators, library media specialists, classroom teachers, students and parents are the partners in the shared goal of providing successful experiences for all students.

The separate but overlapping roles of the library media specialist as a teacher, information specialist, and instructional consultant ensure that the library media program is an integral part of the instructional program of the school.

The delivery of an effective library media program is directly influenced by the availability of materials.  Therefore the following guidelines have been established in order that all students may have access to the building-level collection and share in the responsibility of maintenance and care of Clegern’s resources.

  • A student may checkout two books at a time.  Students in grades Kindergarten and First are allowed to checkout one book at a time.

  • The checkout period for books is two weeks.  Books may be rechecked if additional reading time is needed.

  • If a child has an overdue book, he/she may receive and “overdue notice”.  The notices are printed weekly and will be delivered to the individual student.

  • Books that are lost, stolen, mutilated or damaged will require replacement by the responsible individual.  Replacement prices are based upon prices available from current catalogues, Books-In-Print, or if out of print, an average replacement price of $10.00 is assessed.

  • A book that is later found after a replacement fee has been paid will only have the fee reimbursed through the end of the school year in which it was lost.

  • Books, which are not extensive in their damage, will require special repairing.  Please do not attempt to mend the book.

  • Reference material must remain in the library media center for usage during the school day; however, the reference materials may be checked-out “overnight” in order to complete assignments.  The reference material may be checked-out at the end of the school day and must be returned by 9:00 a.m. the following school day.

  • Magazines may also be checked-out for “overnight”.  The same procedure is to be used as with the reference material.
