General Information

After School Playground Use

The Clegern playground is reserved from 3:05PM until 6:00PM for the supervised use of the Clegern After Care Program.  Children waiting for parent pick up are to wait at the designated area for student pick-up as outlined on page 27 of this handbook, not at the playground.  NO children at anytime may be left unsupervised on the playground while parents are inside the school handling school business.

Arrival

Before Care begins at 7:00 a.m.  Before Care students will be served breakfast at 8:00 a.m.  Breakfast for all students will be served from 8:05 to 8:25 a.m.  Breakfast will not be served after 8:25 a.m.  Students not participating in Before Care or breakfast should not arrive before 8:05 a.m. and will report to the cafeteria where they will wait in designated grade level areas.  Weather permitting a duty teacher will take students outside for a brief five minute break time prior to the 8:30 a.m. bell.

 Assessment

Teachers use multi-criteria assessments when measuring student mastery of the stated objectives through projects, daily assignments, performance, tests, etc.  Each child’s progress is observed and recorded at regular intervals.  Results are used to improve and individualize instruction.

Attendance at an Open Enrollment School

At an open enrollment school transportation is provided by parents.  Placement may be revoked by the school principal if the student’s grades, attendance (absences and/or tardies), transportation arrangements, or behavior reach an unacceptable level.

Birthday Parties/School Parties

Three school parties will be held during the year.  Personal party invitations should not be distributed at school.  Children’s birthdays will be recognized during CST.  Birthday parties are not appropriate for the classroom.

 Cafeteria

Breakfast is available for all students.  Breakfast is $1.00 for students and $1.35 for guests and is served from 8:00-8:25 a.m.  Edmond Public Schools participates in the National School Lunch Program.  The cafeteria will serve hot lunches beginning the first day of school.  Lunch purchased on a daily basis costs $1.85 for students and $2.60 for guests.  Children from households whose income falls within the federal income guidelines are eligible for either free or reduced prices.  An application is available in the office.  Lunch money loans are available only on an emergency basis.  These are personal loans and must be repaid the following day.  Efforts will be made to notify parents before loaning money.  Parents are welcome to eat with their children.  Reservations for eating lunch at school should be made by phoning the office before 9:00 a.m.

 Closing School

Oklahoma’s severe weather occasionally makes it necessary to close school.  Area television and radio stations will alert the public when this decision has been made.  Early dismissal is not a common practice in the Edmond School system due to the inconvenience it would cause working parents.

Delivery of Messages to Students

Messages for students during school hours are discouraged.  After school plans should be made before school.  Messages will be delivered at the end of the day or at a convenient time for the office staff.  Messages must be short and should be called in before 2:45.  We cannot guarantee that messages called in after 2:45 will be delivered.

 Flower/Gift Deliveries

We discourage flowers, balloon bouquets, cookie baskets, etc.  Items delivered to students will need to remain in the office for the day.

 Instruction

The curriculum at our school includes an integrated study of reading, math, language arts, spelling, social studies, science, penmanship, health, physical education, music and art.  In addition to the designated curriculum for Edmond schools Clegern also implements the Core Knowledge Sequence.  Information about the specific Core Knowledge curriculum taught at each grade level is presented to parents at Back to School Night/Parent Night.  A complete copy of the sequence of curriculum K-5 is available in the office or the Media Center.

Insurance

The Edmond Schools makes accident insurance available to students.  The school system is not financially responsible for the cost of any accidental injury occurring from a school activity.  The insurance is offered as a convenience.  Enrollment forms for insurance are made available at the beginning of the school year and in the office.

Money at School

Students should not bring money to school unless it is for lunches or at school request.

 Personal Items

Please mark all lunch containers, backpacks, and clothing with your child’s name.  Items collected in Lost and Found, which go unclaimed, will be given to a local needy charity.

 Physical Education

Tennis shoes and appropriate clothing should be worn during PE classes.

Priority Academic Student Skills

A copy of the Priority Academic Student Skills recommended by the Oklahoma State Department of Education is available in the office for review.

Privacy

Oklahoma Law (Section 24-102 of Title 70) states “Pupils shall not have any reasonable expectation of privacy towards school administrators of teachers in the contents of a school locker, desk, or other property.  School personnel shall have access to school property in order to properly supervise the welfare of pupils.

School lockers, desks, and other areas of school facilities may be opened and examined by school officials at any time and no reason shall be necessary for such search.”

Student Retention

State law allows a teacher to recommend that a student be retained at the present grade level or failed in a specific academic course.  If a parent or guardian is dissatisfied with the recommendation, he or she may appeal the decision by complying with the District’s appeal process.  The decision of the Board of Education shall be final.

Telephone Use

A telephone is available to students for emergency use only.  Students must have a phone pass from their teacher before using the phone.  Students should make after school plans prior to coming to school.  Students cannot be called from their classroom to take a phone call.
