 SPRING TIPS/REMINDERS

As spring approaches, it is time for some friendly reminders regarding academics and citizenship. Keep the following tips in mind:

Homework: Practice Procedure ALWAYS:

  • Same Place
  • Same Time
  • Study Materials

Practicing these few tips will allow for less stress and fewer obstacles when it comes time to study. Students should study every school night for a minimum of 45 min. If they “do not have home work” this is a good time to review and read. Fall (August 2010) eligibility for participation in extracurricular activities  is based on the student's spring (May 2010) semester grades! Stay focused!

Bullying: Be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem. Think before you speak or act:

  • Is it Kind
  • Is it Hurtful
  • Is it Necessary

All students have had instructional lessons in recognizing and how to respond to bullying. We continue to instruct and guide students in making positive and safe choices on a daily basis. Let's all work together to continue to make Summit the great school/community that it is!

General Information and Tips:

  • Want to know what grades your child is making? Be sure to stop by the office and signup for PIV (if your student attended Edmond schools last year you do not need to sign up again). This system allows you to check your student’s current grades from home.
  • Has your child been absent? If so, go on line and visit each teacher’s web site to find out what the daily assignments were. This is a great tool to utilize if your child forgot to fill out their agenda, have them go the site and complete the task from home. It is important to send the message that the agenda is an essential tool to school success.
  • Are you looking for a tutor or new ideas to help support school success? Stop by your counselor’s office and pick up the information you need. Posted outside our offices you will find the following handouts: tutoring list, study tips (getting organized and how parents can be supportive) and time management ideas.

Hard work and a GREAT attitude are recognized at Summit! We have some outstanding student recognition programs at Summit. We like to reinforce hard work and dedication to education. Making the right choice is not always the easy choice. Following are some of the programs that the counselors are directly involved in regarding student recognition:

  • Eagle’s Nest- Students are nominated by faculty and staff who have made positive choices, improvement in an area, helpful to others, and respectful, etc. Students attend a pizza lunch and receive a certificate of appreciation written by the teacher who nominated them. This (almost) monthly program is hosted by parent club.
  • Golden Summit- Students are nominated by their team of teachers. Parents and extended family members are invited to an evening event honoring their child’s outstanding contributions in the areas of; scholarship, leadership, citizenship.  This celebration is held once a semester.
  • Honor Society-Students who receive this honor have demonstrated high academic achievement and are in the top 10% of their class. Grades used for admittance to the Oklahoma Honor Society are based on spring 09 and fall 09 semester grades. Again, this is an evening event hosted at Summit.
